Gym Equipment List for a New Gym in India (with Budgets)
Gym equipment list for a new gym in India: what to buy first, indicative prices from Indian listings, 18% GST on equipment, floor space per zone and upkeep.
A new gym in India needs, at minimum: dumbbells across a full weight range, two racks with Olympic bars and plates, adjustable benches, a cable station, a lat pulldown and row, a leg press, a few cardio machines and proper rubber flooring. That basic list covers nearly every exercise most members do. Buy that first, buy it well, and add specialised machines once you see what your members actually use. Budget for 18% GST on exercise equipment, which you can't claim back as a gym.
Prices below are indicative ranges from public Indian B2B listings, checked in October 2026. They are not quotes. Get at least three real quotes, in writing, with GST shown.
What should a new gym buy first?
Think in zones. Members judge a gym by whether they can do their workout without waiting, not by how many machines you have.
Buy first (opening day)
Free weights
- Dumbbells, 2.5 kg to at least 30 kg in 2.5 kg steps, with racks
- 2 power racks or squat racks with safety arms
- 2 to 3 Olympic barbells, plus bumper or rubber plates
- 4 adjustable benches (flat to incline)
- A flat bench press station, if your racks can't double as one
Machines
- 1 cable crossover or functional trainer (does dozens of exercises)
- Lat pulldown and seated row (a combo saves space)
- Leg press or hack squat
Cardio
- 3 to 4 commercial treadmills
- 2 bikes (upright or air)
Floor and finishing
- Rubber flooring across the weights area
- Mirrors along at least one wall
- Storage for plates, collars and small kit
Buy later (once you see demand)
- More selectorised machines (chest press, shoulder press, leg extension, leg curl, pec deck)
- Smith machine
- Cross-trainers, rowers, stair climbers
- Kettlebells, battle ropes, sleds, plyo boxes for a functional zone
- A second cable station
Watch what's busy at 7 pm for two or three months, then buy for that.
How much does commercial gym equipment cost in India?
These ranges come from listings on IndiaMART and TradeIndia. They swing widely with brand, steel gauge, motor and warranty. Use them to sanity-check quotes, not to build a final budget.
| Item | Indicative listed range | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Rubber hex dumbbells | About ₹80 to ₹130 per kg | IndiaMART, TradeIndia |
| Motorised commercial treadmill | Mostly ₹75,000 to ₹1.5 lakh for 4 HP listings; ₹2 lakh to ₹3.5 lakh and up for higher-spec models | IndiaMART, TradeIndia |
| Power rack / squat cage | About ₹30,000 to ₹1.5 lakh | IndiaMART |
| Rubber gym floor tiles | About ₹50 to ₹150 per sq ft, rising with thickness | IndiaMART, TradeIndia |
Two things to check on every quote: whether the price includes GST, and what the warranty actually covers (frame, motor, belt, upholstery, labour).
A starter budget (hypothetical)
Say you're opening a 2,000 sq ft strength-focused gym and your quotes come in like this. The dumbbell, rack, treadmill and flooring lines sit within the listed ranges above. The rest are placeholders for your own quotes.
| Item | Working | Amount (before GST) |
|---|---|---|
| Rubber flooring | 1,500 sq ft × ₹90 | ₹1,35,000 |
| Dumbbells 2.5 to 30 kg (12 pairs) | 390 kg × ₹100 | ₹39,000 |
| Power racks | 2 × ₹45,000 | ₹90,000 |
| Olympic bars, plates, collars | Your quote | ₹1,20,000 |
| Adjustable benches | 4 × ₹15,000 | ₹60,000 |
| Cable crossover / functional trainer | Your quote | ₹1,50,000 |
| Lat pulldown and row combo | Your quote | ₹80,000 |
| Leg press | Your quote | ₹1,20,000 |
| Commercial treadmills | 3 × ₹1,00,000 | ₹3,00,000 |
| Bikes | Your quote | ₹60,000 |
| Mirrors, dumbbell racks, storage | Your quote | ₹50,000 |
| Total | ₹12,04,000 |
The dumbbell maths: 12 pairs from 2.5 kg to 30 kg add up to 2 × (2.5 + 5 + … + 30) = 2 × 195 = 390 kg.
Add GST
Under the goods rate notification effective 22 September 2025, "articles and equipment for general physical exercise, gymnastics, athletics" sit in the 18% schedule, while "sports goods other than articles and equipment for general physical exercise" moved to 5%. Treadmills, racks, dumbbells and machines are general exercise equipment, so plan for 18%. Air-conditioners are in the 18% schedule too.
Excluding flooring and mirrors (their rates depend on their own HSN codes, so ask the supplier), the equipment here is ₹12,04,000 − ₹1,35,000 − ₹50,000 = ₹10,19,000. GST at 18% adds ₹1,83,420.
And because gym services are taxed at 5% without input tax credit, you can't set that ₹1.83 lakh off later. It's part of what you spend. Check any quote quickly with the gym GST calculator, which also handles inclusive vs exclusive prices.
Budget tiers
| Tier | What's in it | How to budget |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | The "buy first" list above | Price each line from quotes, like the table |
| Mid | Starter + 4 to 6 selectorised machines, Smith machine, extra cardio | Add each machine's quote to the starter total |
| Full | Mid + functional zone, second cable station, more cardio variety | Only once members and cash flow justify it |
Whichever tier, put the total into the gym profit calculator to see how it changes payback. Every lakh you spend on day one has to come back through membership fees.
How much floor space does each zone need?
Start from each machine's footprint on the spec sheet, then add clearance. Machines need room around them for people to load plates, step on and off, and walk past.
Treadmills. Treadmill manuals that follow ASTM F2115-05 specify at least 0.5 m on each side and 1 m behind for access and emergency dismount. Say a treadmill's footprint is 2.1 m × 0.9 m (check yours). With clearance it takes (0.9 + 0.5 + 0.5) × (2.1 + 1.0) = 1.9 m × 3.1 m ≈ 5.9 m², about 63 sq ft. Side-by-side machines can share side clearance, so a row of four takes less than four times that. Never put a treadmill's back to a wall or a mirror.
Racks. Allow space for a barbell sticking out on both sides, plates stored on the rack, and a spotter walking behind.
Dumbbell area. Leave a clear strip in front of the rack so people can pick up and put back weights without bumping someone on a bench.
As a starting split for a 2,000 sq ft floor (adjust to your members): roughly a third free weights, a quarter machines, a fifth cardio, and the rest for stretching, the functional area, the front desk and walkways. Draw it to scale on paper before you order anything.
How do you keep equipment running?
- Follow the manual's service intervals. Treadmills especially: belt tension, alignment and lubrication as the maker specifies.
- Daily wipe-down of upholstery and grips. Sweat rots vinyl.
- Weekly check of cables, pins, pulleys and bolts on every machine. Replace a fraying cable before it snaps.
- Keep a log for every machine: date bought, warranty end, each service and repair.
- Put money aside monthly for repairs, in a separate account.
- Get an AMC quote with the purchase for treadmills and other motorised machines, and compare it with paying per visit.
Quick checklist
- Equipment list split into "buy first" and "buy later"
- At least three written quotes per major item, GST shown
- Warranty terms compared (frame, motor, belt, upholstery, labour)
- 18% GST on exercise equipment added as a cost
- Floor plan drawn to scale with clearance around treadmills and racks
- Floor load checked if you're above the ground floor
- Maintenance log and monthly repair reserve set up
If you're borrowing for equipment, the quotes above go straight into your project report. Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum equipment needed to start a gym?
A workable minimum is a full set of dumbbells, two racks with Olympic bars and plates, adjustable benches, one cable station, a lat pulldown and row, a leg press, a few cardio machines and proper rubber flooring. That covers almost every basic exercise for most members.
What is the GST rate on gym equipment in India?
Articles and equipment for general physical exercise and gymnastics are taxed at 18% under the GST rate schedule effective 22 September 2025. Sports goods other than general exercise equipment moved to 5%. Ask your supplier for the HSN code on each invoice.
Can a gym claim input tax credit on equipment?
Not for equipment used to provide gym services. Gym services have been taxed at 5% without input tax credit since 22 September 2025, so the 18% GST on equipment is part of your cost.
Should I buy new or used gym equipment?
Free weights, racks and benches are often fine second-hand if welds, pins and upholstery are sound. Be more careful with used treadmills and other motorised machines, where motors and electronics are costly to repair. Ask for service history and test under load.
How much space does a treadmill need?
More than the machine itself. Treadmill manuals that follow ASTM F2115-05 specify at least 0.5 m clear on each side and 1 m behind for access and emergency dismount. Check your own machine's manual and add it to your floor plan.
