Student, Couple and Family Gym Plans: How to Price Them
How to price student, couple and family gym plans in India: discount per extra person, eligibility proof, minors and guardian consent, senior plans and GST.
Student, couple and family plans work when the discount is small, tied to a reason you can check, and paid for by something you gain: off-peak usage, a member who would not have joined alone, or a household that renews together. A good starting point is full price for the first person and 15 to 20% off for each extra family member, 20% or so off for verified students, and bigger cuts only for plans that are restricted to quiet hours. Write the eligibility rules down before you put a single price on the board.
Get your base price right first. If you haven't done that yet, start with how to price gym memberships or the gym membership price calculator, then come back here.
Why do segmented plans work at all?
- They fill empty hours. In many gyms the floor is full early morning and evening and quiet mid-day, while rent and staff cost the same. A 2pm member costs you very little extra.
- They bring people who wouldn't join alone. A wife who joins because her husband trains, or a younger brother who tags along, wasn't coming from an Instagram ad.
- Households tend to stick together. When two people in a house train together, quitting becomes a family decision. Test it on your own register: compare couple and single renewals in the gym churn calculator.
The risk: every discounted plan is a cheaper door, and some full-price members will try to walk through it.
What does a sample pricing table look like?
Here is a hypothetical menu for a gym whose regular monthly plan is ₹1,500, GST included. Use it as a shape, not as your numbers.
| Plan | Who qualifies | Hours | Price per month | Saving vs ₹1,500 per person |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular | Anyone | All hours | ₹1,500 | 0% |
| Off-peak | Anyone | 10am to 4pm, Mon to Sat | ₹1,100 | 26.7% |
| Student | Valid student ID | All hours | ₹1,200 | 20% |
| Student off-peak | Valid student ID | 10am to 4pm | ₹1,000 | 33.3% |
| Couple | Two people, same address | All hours | ₹2,700 for both | 10% |
| Family of 3 | Same household | All hours | ₹3,900 for all | 13.3% |
| Family of 4 | Same household | All hours | ₹5,100 for all | 15% |
| Senior (60+) | Age proof + health form | 10am to 4pm | ₹1,100 | 26.7% |
The couple and family rows all use one rule: first person ₹1,500, each extra person ₹1,200 (20% off). So a couple pays ₹1,500 + ₹1,200 = ₹2,700 against ₹3,000 at full price, a 10% saving. A family of four pays ₹1,500 + 3 × ₹1,200 = ₹5,100 against ₹6,000, a 15% saving.
Before you print anything, run each discounted price through the gym discount offer calculator to see what it costs you and how many extra joins it needs to pay for itself.
How should you price a student plan?
- Offer an off-peak version. A cheaper 10-to-4 plan suits college timetables and keeps your 7pm floor clear.
- Check the ID every time. Ask for a current college or school ID with a photo and a validity year, or a bonafide certificate or fee receipt for this academic year. Write the ID number and its expiry on the member record. A 2023 ID card in 2026 is a full-price member.
- Set an age band. "Students aged 16 to 25" stops a 40-year-old on a weekend course from claiming it. Pick your own band and apply it to everyone.
- Plan for exam season. Board and semester exams empty the student floor for weeks. Offer a short exam freeze, written in your terms, the same for every student. Our membership freeze policy guide has the rules and the end-date maths.
What about members under 18?
Section 11 of the Indian Contract Act, 1872 says a person is competent to contract only if they are of the age of majority under the law that applies to them, and the Majority Act, 1875 sets that at 18 for people domiciled in India. Section 10 of the same Act says an agreement is a contract only when it is made by parties competent to contract. So a membership form signed by a 16-year-old alone may not be an enforceable contract.
In practice, for a 16 or 17-year-old:
- Have a parent or guardian sign the membership form and the health declaration, with their name, relationship and phone number.
- Take the payment from the guardian, or at least put the guardian's name on the receipt.
- Keep minors off photos, leaderboards and face check-in unless the guardian agrees. The DPDP Act, 2023 treats anyone under 18 as a child and, under section 9, requires verifiable parental consent before processing a child's personal data.
- Decide your own minimum age and say whether under-18s need a trainer present.
This is general information, not legal advice. Ask a lawyer to look over your minor's consent form once.
How do you price couple and family plans?
Discount per additional person
Give the discount on the second, third and fourth person, not on the first. Your headline price never drops, and the saving grows with the household.
Check the floor. Say (hypothetically) each member costs you about ₹100 a month in variable costs such as cleaning supplies, water and wear. A ₹1,200 GST-inclusive price is ₹1,200 ÷ 1.05 = ₹1,143 before GST, leaving about ₹1,043 a month after variable costs. If a discount pushes the per-person price below break-even, more families just means more loss.
Minimum commitment
Couple and family plans work best on quarterly or longer terms. A month-to-month family plan invites "let's try it for a month". Using the same 20% rule on a ₹4,000 quarterly plan, a couple pays ₹4,000 + ₹3,200 = ₹7,200 for three months.
Eligibility
"Same household" needs a test you can check without being nosy. The simplest is a shared address on any ID. Flatmates are your call. Whatever you choose, apply it to everyone.
What happens if one person quits?
Decide before you sell the first plan, and print it on the form:
- The remaining member keeps their current price until the paid term ends.
- At renewal, they move to the plan that fits: single rate, or a smaller family rate.
- No refund of the discount already given for the period paid.
- If the couple separates mid-term, each can continue as an individual until the term ends.
Keep it reasonable. The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 treats a contract term that imposes a wholly disproportionate penalty or an unreasonable condition as an "unfair contract" (section 2(46)). Clawing back months of discount in one go after a breakup will look exactly like that to a consumer commission.
Do senior citizen plans need extra care?
Yes, mainly around safety.
- Health screening first. Have every senior member fill the free PAR-Q+, which starts with seven yes/no questions. A "yes" leads to follow-up questions, and may mean speaking to a doctor or a qualified exercise professional before starting. Keep the form on file.
- Supervision in the first weeks. Pair new senior members with a trainer for their first few sessions, at a time when the floor is quiet.
- Balance and strength, not just the treadmill. The WHO recommends that adults over 65 do muscle-strengthening activity on two or more days a week, and that those with poor mobility do balance work on three or more days.
Define "senior" yourself (60+ or 65+) and ask for age proof once at joining.
Where do corporate and off-peak plans fit?
A corporate tie-up is a group discount where the employer does the eligibility check for you. Pricing models, the GST position and agreements are covered in corporate gym membership tie-ups.
A plain off-peak plan is open to anyone, with no proof needed, because the restriction is the hours. If you have an access system, set the plan's valid hours in it so the scanner or the desk enforces the window.
How do you stop full-price members from switching?
Run a hypothetical. Say 20 couples already train with you, each paying ₹1,500 per person. If they all move to the couple plan, you lose ₹300 per couple a month: 20 × ₹300 = ₹6,000 a month, ₹72,000 a year. To win that back you need ₹6,000 ÷ ₹2,700 = 2.2, so three new couples who stay.
Ways to keep the loss small:
- Make eligibility checkable. Student ID, address proof, age proof. No proof, no plan.
- Attach a restriction. Off-peak hours, a longer minimum term, or no freeze allowance. The restriction is what separates the plans.
- Switch at renewal, not mid-term. Existing members can move to a new plan when their current one ends.
- Don't advertise it as a sale. Segmented plans are permanent options with rules. Festival discounts are short-term pushes, and our festival offers guide covers those separately. Mixing the two teaches members to wait for a deal.
- Review it every six months. If most of your new joins pick the cheapest plan, the cheapest plan is too cheap.
Does GST change for discounted plans?
No. Gym and fitness centre services moved to 5% GST without input tax credit from 22 September 2025, following the 56th GST Council meeting. That rate applies to the student plan, the couple plan and the senior plan just the same. If you're GST-registered, a ₹2,700 GST-inclusive couple plan is ₹2,571.43 of fee plus ₹128.57 of GST.
Decide whether your board shows prices inclusive or exclusive of GST and keep it the same for every plan. The gym GST calculator splits any price into fee and tax. Confirm how to invoice a single payment covering several members with your CA.
How should you show these plans on the board and WhatsApp?
Lead with the regular plan. Then a separate block headed "Plans for students, couples, families and seniors", each line with the price per month, the hours, and the proof needed.
For WhatsApp, keep it to one plan per message:
Hi Neha, since you and Rohan both train here, you may like our couple plan: ₹2,700 a month for both of you (₹1,500 + ₹1,200, GST included), all hours. Needs one ID showing the same address. It starts from your next renewal on 15 November. Reply YES and we'll set it up.
Show the per-person maths. "₹1,350 each" sells better than "10% off", and it's easier to check.

- PAR-Q+ on file for senior members, trainer for first sessions
- Off-peak hours written down and enforced at the desk or scanner
- "If one person quits" rule printed on the form
- Existing members switch only at renewal
- GST at 5% applied the same way to every plan

Frequently asked questions
How much discount should a couple gym membership get?
A common, safe structure is full price for the first person and 15 to 20% off for the second, which works out to roughly 7.5 to 10% off the pair. Go deeper only if the plan is off-peak or annual, and check the second member's price still covers your cost per member.
Can a 16-year-old sign a gym membership on their own?
It is safer not to rely on it. Under section 11 of the Indian Contract Act read with the Majority Act, a person domiciled in India becomes competent to contract at 18, and courts have long treated agreements with minors as void. Have a parent or guardian sign the membership form and health declaration, and confirm your wording with a lawyer.
What proof should a gym ask for a student discount?
A current college or school ID card with the member's photo and a visible validity year, or a fee receipt or bonafide certificate for the current academic year. Note the ID number and expiry on the member record and check it again at every renewal.
What happens to a couple plan if one person stops coming?
Decide this before you sell it and write it in the terms. A simple rule is that the remaining member keeps their current price until the paid term ends, then renews at the single-member rate, with no refund of the discount already given.
Do student and family plans attract GST?
Yes. A discount lowers the price but not the rate. Gym and fitness centre services are taxed at 5% without input tax credit from 22 September 2025, so a GST-registered gym charges 5% on every plan, discounted or not.
