Gym ad cost per member calculator

Ads Manager tells you cost per lead. What you need to know is cost per member who actually paid. Enter what you spent on Facebook, Instagram or Google ads, how many leads came in, how many booked a trial and how many joined. You'll see what each new member really cost, including GST, how many months of fees it takes to earn that back, and the most you can afford to pay for a lead.

Your funnel

Bar length is relative to leads. The cost on each bar is ad cost divided by people at that step.

Cost per member if more leads turned up and joined

Same ad spend, different follow-up. Rows are leads who came for a trial, columns are trials who joined. Your row and column are highlighted; red means payback slower than your target.

Your real ad cost per member is everything you paid Meta or Google, GST included, divided by the people who actually paid for a membership. Not leads, not trials. With the example on load (₹15,000 before 18% GST, 100 leads, 30% come for a trial, 40% of those join), you pay ₹177 a lead, but each of the 12 new members costs ₹1,475. At ₹1,400 a month in fees, that's just over one month of fees to earn back.

The numbers are hypothetical, taken from the worked example in our Facebook ads for gyms guide. Replace them with yours; nothing you type leaves your browser.

What the calculator works out

  • Cost per lead, per trial and per member (CAC). The same ad cost divided by people at each step of the funnel.
  • Member lifetime value (LTV). Fees one member pays you over their stay.
  • LTV : CAC. How many rupees of fees come back for each rupee spent getting the member.
  • Payback. How many months of that member's fees it takes to cover what you spent to get them.
  • The most you can pay per lead for the payback you want, at your own conversion rates.
  • A what-if grid showing CAC if more leads came for a trial or more trials joined.

The formulas

ItemFormulaExample
Ad costspend × (1 + GST rate)₹15,000 × 1.18 = ₹17,700
Trialsleads × trial %100 × 30% = 30
Memberstrials × join %30 × 40% = 12
Cost per leadad cost ÷ leads₹177
Cost per trialad cost ÷ trials₹590
CACad cost ÷ members + offer cost₹1,475
Lifetime1 ÷ monthly churn, or months entered1 ÷ 8% = 12.5 months
LTVmonthly revenue × lifetime₹1,400 × 12.5 = ₹17,500
LTV : CACLTV ÷ CAC11.9 : 1
PaybackCAC ÷ monthly revenue1.05 months
Most per lead(target months × monthly revenue − offer cost) × trial % × join %₹1,400 × 0.3 × 0.4 = ₹168

If you only know clicks, leads = clicks × the share who filled the form or started a chat. LTV uses the common subscription shortcut, average revenue per user ÷ churn rate, which assumes a steady share of members leaves each month. The gym churn calculator works out your churn from member counts.

Without GST the example matches the guide exactly: ₹150 a lead, ₹1,250 a member and an LTV : CAC of 14.

Why GST on ads matters

Google's payments help says customers in India are charged GST at 18% (CGST 9% + SGST 9% within the same state, otherwise IGST 18%). Meta's help centre says ads bought in India are sold by Meta India and GST and TDS are added whenever you're charged; that page doesn't state a rate, so check it on your invoice and change the GST field if it differs.

Whether that GST is a cost depends on your own GST. Since September 2025 gym services are taxed at 5% without input tax credit, so for most gyms the GST on ads can't be set off and belongs in CAC. Tick "I claim input tax credit" only if your CA confirms you can. The gym GST calculator covers the fee side.

How to read your result

Judge ads by cost per member, never cost per lead. Cheap leads that never visit are expensive members. In the grid, drop the trial rate from 30% to 20% and the example CAC jumps from ₹1,475 to ₹2,213, with the same ads and the same spend. Same-day follow-up, a booked trial slot and a clear ask on the last day often move CAC more than any change to the ad. Our post on turning trials into members has the follow-up sequence, and the gym sales script has replies to "I'll think about it".

Payback is the number to set a budget with. The pill uses the rule of thumb from the Facebook ads guide: aim for a cost per member below one month's fee, and treat two or three months as acceptable only once you know members stay. LTV is fees, not profit. Rent, salaries and electricity come out of it, so a big LTV : CAC doesn't mean you can spend anywhere near the LTV.

LTV : CAC has no gym benchmark we can point you to. There's no published figure for Indian gyms. Track your own ratio month by month and by ad type (lead form against click-to-WhatsApp) and keep the one that's better.

"Most you can pay per lead" is your bidding guardrail. If Ads Manager shows a cost per result above it, that campaign won't pay back in your target time unless your trial and join rates improve.

What the calculator leaves out

  • People who'd have joined anyway. Someone who saw your board for months and then clicked an ad gets counted as an ad join. Ask every joiner where they heard about you.
  • Time to convert. Leads from the last week of the month may join next month. Use at least four weeks.
  • Staff time and creative costs. Add any video shoot or agency fee to the spend.
  • TDS. Meta's page says TDS is included in the charge and refunded as ad credit once you give them the TDS certificate. Not modelled here.
  • Cost of serving the member. Payback is in months of fees, as in the guide. For profit after running costs, use the gym profit calculator.

There are no "typical cost per lead" figures here, on purpose. Costs vary by city, season, radius and offer, and we couldn't find a reliable published source for Indian gyms. Run a four-week test, log every lead and measure your own.

This is a planning estimate. Confirm your GST and TDS treatment with your CA.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate cost per member from Facebook ads?

Add GST to your ad spend, then divide by the number of people from those ads who paid for a membership. ₹15,000 plus 18% GST is ₹17,700; if 12 people joined, each member cost ₹1,475.

Is GST charged on Facebook and Google ads in India?

Yes. Google's payments help states GST at 18% for customers in India, and Meta's help centre says GST and TDS are added when you're charged for ads. Gyms charging 5% GST can't take input tax credit, so treat it as a cost.

What is a good cost per lead for a gym in India?

There's no reliable published benchmark. The right number depends on your conversion: at 30% coming for a trial, 40% joining and a one-month payback on a ₹1,400 fee, you can afford about ₹168 per lead including GST, or about ₹142 before GST.

What does LTV to CAC ratio mean for a gym?

It's the fees a member pays over their stay divided by what you spent to get them. 11.9 : 1 means ₹11.90 of fees for each ₹1 of ads. It's revenue, not profit, so use payback months to set the budget.

Should I count leads or trials to judge an ad?

Neither on its own. Judge ads by cost per paying member. Two ads with the same cost per lead can differ by double or more in cost per member if one brings people who never visit.
