Most small, single-location gyms in India can get their first members without a website, because people find gyms through Google Maps and then talk to them on WhatsApp. So get your Google Business Profile and WhatsApp right first. Once that's done, a simple one-page website is worth having: it builds trust, answers the price question, gives your ads a proper landing page, and gives you an address you own instead of renting space on Instagram.

You don't need a big site. One fast page that answers the basic questions and makes it easy to message you is enough.

## Do you really need a website, or is Google Maps enough?

People search "gym near me" or "gym in Andheri West", check the map results, photos and reviews, then call or message. Most of that happens inside your Google Business Profile, not on a website.

Google's own help page on [how local results are ranked](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7091) names relevance, distance and prominence, and says prominence draws on things like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have. A website isn't listed as a requirement. A complete, active profile with real reviews does more for "gym near me" than a website nobody visits. Our [Google Business Profile guide for gyms](/blog/google-business-profile-for-gyms/) covers that setup, and [getting more Google reviews](/blog/get-more-google-reviews-gym/) covers the reviews part within Google's rules.

So here's the honest order:

1. Google Business Profile, verified and fully filled in.
2. A WhatsApp Business number that someone actually answers.
3. Then a website.

## When does a website actually help?

A website starts earning its keep in five situations.

- **Trust.** A clean page with your address, timings and trainers looks like a real business to a cautious first-timer or a corporate HR person.
- **Price clarity.** "Price?" is the most common first message most gyms get. A page that says "plans from ₹X" answers it before the chat starts.
- **Searches for your area.** A page titled "Gym in [area], [city]" with your real address, timings and facilities gives Google something to match for searches beyond the map pack.
- **Ads.** If you run Meta or Google ads, you need somewhere to send the click. A page that matches the ad converts better than a profile grid. More on that below.
- **Owning your presence.** Instagram accounts get hacked or locked. A domain you control stays yours, and you can print it on flyers for years.

If none of these apply yet, park the website until you start running ads or open a second branch.

## What happened to the free Google Business Profile website?

It's gone. Google used to let businesses build a basic site from their profile, on a business.site address. Those sites were [turned off in March 2024](https://searchengineland.com/google-shutting-down-websites-business-profiles-436393), visitors were redirected to the Business Profile only until 10 June 2024, and business.site and negocio.site addresses were removed from the website field.

If an old business.site link still sits on your flyers or Instagram bio, replace it. Google's [Edit your Business Profile](https://support.google.com/business/answer/14368911?hl=en) help page says to enter the full URL with http:// or https:// in the website field and make sure Googlebot isn't blocked on your site.

## What should a one-page gym website include?

One long page is plenty for a single gym. Put these sections on it, roughly in this order.

| Section | What to put | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Headline | "[Gym name], gym in [area], [city]" plus one line on what you're good at | Tells Google and the visitor where you are in two seconds |
| Prices | Monthly, quarterly, annual, or at least "from ₹X", GST shown clearly | Answers the most common question |
| Timings | Daily hours, Sunday hours, ladies' batch if any, festival closures | Second most common question |
| Location | Full address, landmark, embedded map, parking note | Saves "where exactly?" calls |
| Photos | Real photos of the floor, equipment, changing rooms, at peak and off-peak | Builds trust; stock photos do the opposite |
| Trainers | Names, photos, certifications you can show | People join trainers as much as gyms |
| Free trial | What the trial includes and how to book it | Gives a low-risk next step |
| WhatsApp button | A click-to-chat link with a pre-filled message | One tap from interest to conversation |
| Footer | Phone, email, GSTIN if registered, privacy notice link | Basic credibility and legal hygiene |

Free calculators make good extra content later. Our [free fitness and gym tools](/tools/) show the kind of page members bookmark and share.

### How do you make a WhatsApp click-to-chat link?

WhatsApp's [click to chat help page](https://faq.whatsapp.com/5913398998672934/?locale=en_US) gives the format: `https://wa.me/<number>`, where the number is the full phone number in international format, and you omit any zeroes, brackets or dashes. For an Indian mobile that means 91 followed by the 10-digit number, with no plus sign.

To pre-fill a message, add `?text=` and the URL-encoded text, so spaces become `%20`:

Test it on your phone before using it anywhere.

## Do you need a privacy policy on a gym website?

If the site collects anything personal (a trial booking form with name and phone, an enquiry form, a health questionnaire), yes, you should have a clear privacy notice.

Under the [Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023](https://www.meity.gov.in/static/uploads/2024/06/2bf1f0e9f04e6fb4f8fef35e82c42aa5.pdf), when you ask for consent you must give a notice saying what personal data you collect and why, and how the person can withdraw consent and raise a complaint. The [DPDP Rules, 2025](https://www.meity.gov.in/static/uploads/2025/11/53450e6e5dc0bfa85ebd78686cadad39.pdf) add detail on how that notice should be written. Most of these duties apply from May 2027, so there is time to do it properly, but a website form is an easy place to start getting it right.

Keep the form short: name, phone number and preferred time. A trial booking doesn't need date of birth, address or medical history. Our guide to [gym member data privacy in India](/blog/gym-member-data-privacy-india/) walks through notice, consent and security in more detail. Have a lawyer look over your final notice.

## How fast and mobile-friendly does it need to be?

Almost everyone will open your site on a phone, often on patchy mobile data, so it needs to load fast and read well on a small screen.

Google's [Core Web Vitals](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/core-web-vitals) give three targets for a good experience:

- **Loading (LCP):** main content visible within 2.5 seconds.
- **Responsiveness (INP):** under 200 milliseconds after a tap.
- **Visual stability (CLS):** a layout shift score under 0.1, so buttons don't jump as the page loads.

Keep it in proportion. Google's [page experience guidance](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/page-experience) says it always tries to show the most relevant content even if the page experience is sub-par, and that good scores don't guarantee top rankings. Speed matters more for the person holding the phone than for the algorithm.

Practical fixes for a gym site:

- Compress photos before uploading.
- Avoid auto-playing videos and pop-ups.
- Make the WhatsApp button big and easy to tap with a thumb.
- Test on a cheap Android phone, not just your laptop.

## Should you add structured data for your gym?

Structured data is a small block of code that tells search engines what your business is, where it is and when it's open. Schema.org has a specific type for this, [ExerciseGym](https://schema.org/ExerciseGym), which sits under LocalBusiness and SportsActivityLocation.

Google's [local business structured data guide](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/local-business) lists name and address as required, recommends fields like telephone, url, opening hours, geo coordinates and price range, and says to use the most specific LocalBusiness subtype you can. It also says Google doesn't guarantee that features using structured data will show up in results. Make sure the name, address and phone match your Google Business Profile exactly.

## What does a gym website cost, and who should build it?

Prices change too often to quote reliably, so compare on these points:

- **Domain:** the yearly renewal price, not just the first-year offer. Register it in your own name and email, not the designer's.
- **Hosting:** what's included (SSL certificate, backups, email), and the renewal price.
- **Who can edit it:** can you change prices and timings yourself, or do you have to call someone every time?
- **Who owns it:** if you part ways with the builder, do you keep the domain, the content and the photos?

| Option | Upfront effort | Ongoing cost | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DIY website builder | A weekend of your time | Monthly or yearly plan | Owners who'll keep prices and photos updated themselves | Templates that look generic; plans that renew higher |
| Freelancer | A few calls and your content | One-time fee, sometimes a yearly maintenance fee | A clean one-page site, built once | Domain registered in their name; no way to edit later |
| Agency | Briefings and approvals | Higher, often monthly | Multi-branch gyms that also want ads and SEO handled | Paying for pages and features you don't need |

For one gym, a DIY builder or a freelancer is usually enough. Get the logins and domain in your name before paying the final instalment.

## How should a website work with your ads?

If you run ads, the website is where your money turns into enquiries or leaks away. A good landing page repeats the ad's offer in the headline, shows the price and location straight away, and has one action: tap to WhatsApp or book a trial.

Before you spend, work out what each enquiry and new member costs with the [ad cost per member calculator](/tools/gym-ad-cost-per-member-calculator/). Compare that with what a member is worth over their stay. Our guide to [Facebook ads for gyms in India](/blog/facebook-ads-for-gyms-india/) covers targeting and offers.

## What should you not do on a gym website?

- **Don't hide prices completely.** "Call for price" sends people to the gym next door that shows them.
- **Don't use stock photos** of models in a gym that isn't yours. Visitors notice when they walk in.
- **Don't post member before-and-after photos** without written consent.
- **Don't collect more data than you need** on forms, and never health details on an open form.
- **Don't let it go stale.** Last year's Diwali offer and old timings hurt trust more than no site.
- **Don't build a members' login area** for a single gym. If you use MyGymGate, each member already gets a private tracker link with their visits, plan and QR pass, no app needed.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I still get a free website from Google Business Profile?

No. Google turned off websites made with Business Profiles in March 2024, and the old business.site addresses stopped redirecting in June 2024. You need to build a site elsewhere and paste its address into the website field on your profile.

### Should I show membership prices on my gym website?

Showing at least a starting price, such as "monthly plans from ₹1,200", answers the first question most visitors have and filters out people who were never going to join. You can keep PT and offer pricing for the WhatsApp chat or the trial visit.

### Is an Instagram page enough instead of a website?

It can be enough to start, but you do not own the account or control how it shows up in Google. A simple website gives you one stable address for your Google profile, your ads and your bio links, and it stays even if a social account gets locked.

### What is the best page to send gym ad traffic to?

A single page that matches the ad, with the offer, the price, the location and one clear action such as a WhatsApp chat or a trial booking form. Sending ad clicks to a busy Instagram grid usually makes the next step harder to find.
