UPI AutoPay lets a gym member approve a recurring mandate once in their UPI app, after which the membership fee is debited automatically on the agreed date. Under RBI's current e-mandate rules, each debit up to ₹15,000 can go through without the member entering their PIN again, the member gets an alert at least 24 hours before every debit, and they can opt out or cancel at any time. To offer it, a gym needs a payment provider or bank that supports UPI mandates, not just a UPI QR code.

It suits monthly plans very well. It is less useful for big annual plans. Here's how it works, what it costs, and how to roll it out without upsetting anyone.

## What exactly is UPI AutoPay?

UPI AutoPay is NPCI's recurring payment feature on UPI. NPCI [launched it in July 2020](https://npci.org.in/PDF/npci/press-releases/2020/NPCI_Press_Release-NPCI_introduces_AutoPay_facility_on_UPI_for_recurring_payments.pdf) under UPI 2.0, with mandates that can run daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, half-yearly or yearly, among other frequencies. Each UPI app has a mandates or AutoPay section where the user can approve, pause and revoke their mandates.

Before that, RBI had set up an e-mandate framework for cards and wallets in 2019 and [extended it to UPI in January 2020](https://www.rbi.org.in/Scripts/NotificationUser.aspx?Id=11784&Mode=0). Those older circulars have now been rolled into one document, the [Digital Payments – E-mandate Framework, 2026](https://www.rbi.org.in/Scripts/BS_ViewMasDirections.aspx?id=13374), issued on 21 April 2026. That is the one to quote if a member or staff member asks "what are the rules?"

## How does a member approve a gym AutoPay mandate?

From the member's side it takes under a minute:

1. You (or your provider's system) send a mandate request for the plan, usually as a payment link, a QR on the counter or a request to their UPI ID.
2. The member sees the details in their UPI app: your gym's name, the amount (or the maximum amount), the frequency and the validity period.
3. They approve it with their UPI PIN. This is the "additional factor of authentication" that the RBI framework requires at registration.
4. The first debit also needs authentication. If the first payment is taken at the same moment the mandate is set up, the [framework allows both to be combined](https://www.rbi.org.in/Scripts/BS_ViewMasDirections.aspx?id=13374) into one step.
5. After that, each debit runs automatically on the schedule, with an alert before and after.

Changing the mandate (amount, validity) or withdrawing it also needs the member's authentication. Nobody at your front desk can change it on their behalf, which is a good thing.

## What are the limits and rules in 2026?

These come from the [RBI E-mandate Framework, 2026](https://www.rbi.org.in/Scripts/BS_ViewMasDirections.aspx?id=13374), which covers cards, prepaid instruments and UPI:

- **₹15,000 per debit without re-authentication.** Recurring debits up to ₹15,000 go through without the PIN. Anything above needs the member to authenticate that debit.
- **₹1 lakh for three categories only.** Insurance premiums, mutual fund subscriptions and credit card bill payments get the higher limit. Gym fees are not on that list, so the ₹15,000 limit applies to you.
- **Pre-debit alert at least 24 hours before.** It must show the merchant name, amount, debit date and time, mandate reference and reason.
- **Opt-out any time.** After the alert, the member can skip that one debit or withdraw the mandate entirely.
- **Post-debit alert.** After each debit the member gets a confirmation with the amount, references and grievance details.
- **Free for the member.** No charge can be levied on the customer for using the e-mandate facility.
- **Fixed or variable amount.** A mandate can be for a fixed amount, or a variable one with a maximum the member agrees to.

One newer practical detail: NPCI's May 2025 guidelines on UPI API usage, in force from 1 August 2025, [restrict AutoPay executions to non-peak hours](https://www.scconline.com/blog/post/2025/07/30/upi-changes-starting-august-1-ncpi-guidelines-upi-api-usage-2025/), meaning before 10 am, between 1 pm and 5 pm, or after 9:30 pm. So a debit due on the 10th may land at 7 am or at 11 pm. Tell members "on the 10th", not "at 10 am".

As always with payment rules, check with your provider and CA for your exact setup.

## How can a small gym actually get UPI AutoPay?

Your regular business UPI QR or UPI ID can't create mandates. You need a merchant account with a provider that offers UPI AutoPay. The usual types are:

- **Payment aggregators and payment gateways.** They onboard small merchants online, after business KYC checks, and give you a dashboard or links to create subscription plans.
- **Your bank's merchant or collections service.** Many banks offer recurring collections to current account holders, sometimes bundled with NACH.
- **Billing or subscription platforms** that sit on top of a gateway and handle plans, reminders and invoices.

Whichever you pick, ask these questions before signing:

- Do you support UPI AutoPay, card mandates and NACH, or only one?
- What do you charge per mandate registration and per successful debit? Is there a charge for failed debits?
- How fast is settlement to my bank account?
- Can I create monthly and quarterly plans myself, and pause a member's plan when they freeze?
- What does the member see as the merchant name in their app?
- Do I get a report of failed debits each day?

### What fees should you expect?

There is no single official merchant fee for mandates that applies to everyone, so we won't quote one. Ask your provider for the MDR or platform fee on UPI mandates, in writing, and work it into your plan price. The one fixed rule is on the member's side: the RBI framework says they can't be charged for using the facility.

To see what a fee does to your margin, plug your numbers into the [gym profit calculator](/tools/gym-profit-calculator/).

## Monthly or annual plans: where does AutoPay fit?

| Plan | Typical fee (hypothetical) | Under ₹15,000? | AutoPay experience |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly | ₹1,200 | Yes | Fully automatic, best fit |
| Quarterly | ₹3,300 | Yes | Automatic, works well |
| Half-yearly | ₹6,000 | Yes | Automatic |
| Annual | ₹12,000 | Yes | Automatic, but a year between debits means the member may forget it is there |
| Annual with PT | ₹24,000 | No | Member must authenticate the debit, so little benefit |

The fees are examples only. Use your own.

Honestly, the biggest win is on monthly plans. Monthly members are the ones who lapse because they forgot, were out of town, or meant to pay "next week". AutoPay turns renewal into the default.

Run a hypothetical. Say you have 120 monthly members at ₹1,200, and each month 10 of them lapse simply because nobody renewed on time, and half of those never come back. That's 5 × ₹1,200 = ₹6,000 a month, or ₹72,000 a year, before counting what each of those members would have paid over their lifetime. The [gym churn calculator](/tools/gym-churn-calculator/) shows the lifetime value side. If you're still setting plan prices, our [gym membership pricing](/blog/gym-membership-pricing/) guide covers the monthly to annual ladder.

## How do UPI AutoPay, card standing instructions and NACH compare?

| | UPI AutoPay | Card standing instruction (e-mandate) | NACH / e-NACH |
|---|---|---|---|
| Debited from | Bank account linked to UPI | Debit or credit card | Bank account |
| Member approves with | UPI PIN in their UPI app | Card authentication (for example, OTP) | Debit card, net banking or Aadhaar online, or a paper form |
| Limit without re-authentication | ₹15,000 per debit | ₹15,000 per debit | Up to the amount set in the mandate |
| Pre-debit alert | At least 24 hours before | At least 24 hours before | Not covered by the RBI e-mandate framework; depends on bank |
| Member cancels | From UPI app, any time | From card issuer, any time | Through their bank; process varies |
| Good for | Monthly and quarterly plans | Members who prefer cards | Larger fixed amounts |

For NACH, which is a separate NPCI clearing system, see this [bank FAQ on NACH e-mandates](https://indianbank.bank.in/en/nach-e-mandate-registration-process-frequently-asked-questions).

For most small gyms, UPI AutoPay is the easiest to explain, because members already use UPI every day.

## What should you do when a debit fails?

Debits fail for ordinary reasons: low balance, the member skipped it after the alert, they withdrew the mandate, or a bank-side issue. Treat a failure as a normal overdue fee, not an emergency.

1. **Check the reason** in your provider's report. "Mandate revoked" needs a conversation; "insufficient funds" usually just needs a nudge.
2. **Message the same day**, politely: "Hi, your ₹1,200 AutoPay for this month didn't go through. You can pay here [link], or let us know if you'd like to change your plan."
3. **Don't keep re-trying on your own.** Let the provider's process run; repeated manual attempts annoy members.
4. **Switch to your normal dues sequence** if it stays unpaid. Our [pending fee collection](/blog/gym-fee-collection-pending-dues/) guide has a day-by-day schedule and scripts.
5. **If the mandate was revoked**, ask why. A revoked mandate is often an early sign the member is about to quit. The signs and fixes are in [how to reduce gym member churn](/blog/reduce-gym-member-churn/).

## How do you explain AutoPay to members?

Keep it short and remove the fear. Most worries are "will you take money without asking?" and "can I stop it?" Answer both up front.

A script for the front desk:

> "We now have UPI AutoPay for monthly plans. You approve it once in your UPI app. A day before each payment your app sends you an alert, and you can skip that month or cancel anytime from the app itself. There's no extra charge to you."

A few rules that help:

- Offer it as a choice at joining and renewal, not a condition.
- Put it in your membership terms: what happens to the plan if a debit is skipped or the mandate is cancelled.
- Pause the mandate (or the plan) when a member freezes their membership, so they aren't charged while away.
- Keep sending renewal reminders to members on manual payment. Our [renewal reminders](/blog/gym-membership-renewal-reminders/) guide covers timing and templates. If you use MyGymGate, renewal and expiry reminder emails go out automatically; it doesn't process payments, so the AutoPay itself stays with your provider.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can a small gym accept UPI AutoPay with a normal business UPI QR code?

No. A static QR or UPI ID only takes one-time payments. To create recurring mandates you need a payment aggregator, payment gateway or bank that offers UPI AutoPay to merchants, and you sign up as a merchant with them.

### Does the member pay anything extra to set up UPI AutoPay?

No. RBI's e-mandate framework says no charges shall be levied on the customer for using the e-mandate facility. Any fee for processing mandates is between the gym and its payment provider.

### Can a member stop UPI AutoPay for the gym at any time?

Yes. The member can opt out of a particular debit after the pre-debit alert or withdraw the whole mandate from their UPI app at any time. Your membership terms should say what happens to the plan if they do.

### Is UPI AutoPay a good idea for a ₹20,000 annual gym plan?

It works, but because the amount is above ₹15,000, the member has to authenticate that debit with their UPI PIN, so it is not hands-free. For large annual plans, a one-time payment at renewal is often simpler.

### Will the gym fee be debited at an exact time?

Not necessarily. Since August 2025, NPCI rules push AutoPay executions outside UPI's peak hours, so the debit can land early morning, mid-afternoon or late night on the due date. Tell members to expect it on the date, not at a set hour.
